Written by Tsignotchka

Anyone can be an NPC. The real trick is to be a good one.

An introduction to the art & skills of NPCing in LARP by Hanbal
(editor's note - this article uses the term LARP to describe LRP. The terms are effectively interchangeable.)

Like with the GM(s) & Scribe(s), NPCs are both essential & an interference to LARP (Live Action Role-Playing). And how well you do it can make a huge difference to the PCs (Player Characters). Below I have outlined a few important facts/hints that, if followed can assist everyone to have a good weekend.

YOU DON”T NEED TO KNOW IT ALL.
Normally, the GM & Scribe have already written the adventure & generally have a very good idea of what will happen & where things are going. You do not need to know everything (unless you are assisting as a GM, Scribe or playing a major NPC role around which the entire adventure (or adventures) are focused. Normally these roles will be cast selectively by those running the weekend dependant on required skills & rules knowledge.

Without a doubt the most attractive part of LRP was the freedom of being out from behind the table. I could really lose myself in the character, especially if I have another couple of role players to bounce off. That continues to be the highlight of any event for me.

Read more...VicLRP's elected review of BIF's July 2007 event: The South Americas.

Before I start this review I want to preface it with I was fatigued from the previous weeks teaching and couldn’t/didn’t give as much to my roleplaying as I might otherwise like. This review is in two parts. The first is a category based review. The second is a ‘what happened to me’ review.
